Rev. Samuel Yat Sing Lai
The loving-kindness of our heavenly Father has always called me throughout my life. Although I grew up in a non-Christian family, I always had many devoted Christian friends, teachers and mentors in my life. I was able to grow spiritually in different stages: from non-believing, and interested in the faith, to becoming a Christian and responding to God’s calling to dedicate my whole life for Him in preaching the Gospel and making disciples in the world, leading people from the spiritual darkness to enter into the true Light of God in Jesus Christ.
This mission is similar to my role in soccer game. As a soccer player, my favorite position is defensive midfielder, whose primary role is to defend the attack from the opponent and then lead my own team to turn into offense. Spiritually, we are also called to such mission. On one hand, we have to defend and protect people’s heart from attack of the evil one, and to deliver them from the bondage of sins. On the other hand, we have to lead Christians to know and experience God, to be transformed by the Gospel, and to become disciples of Christ. Therefore, I really like the following two passages:
2 Corinthians 10:4-5
4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Matthew 28:18-20
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
In addition to responding God’s calling to my life in ministry, I am glad to explore the gifts, potential and interests that the Lord had embedded in me. In particular, I like all kinds of sports, outdoor activities, travel, reading, spending time with family and friends, and leisure cooking.
My family and I are very glad to join the family of SFCAC in 2018. We look forward to having more opportunities and time in growing, serving, and experiencing all life stages, to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will.
